Why the studios appear in this order

Where studios are listed on this site, their order comes from six recorded details we either have or lack, weighted so that contact routes count heaviest. No studio has bought its place in that sequence, and none has been offered the chance. Style is the subject of everything else we publish here, but it plays no part in the order: nothing in it draws on reviews, because we hold none, and nothing draws on an inspected interior, because we visit none.

The ranking parameters

These are the factors that determine the order of the listings you see, and how much each one counts. There are six, they are the same on every site we run, and the table below is the table our own scoring function reads — not a description of it written afterwards.

Every one of them measures the same thing: how much of a listing we hold and can put in front of you. None of them measures how good a company is. A company that has filled in nothing scores zero here and may still be the right one to call. Read the order as a measure of our records, and read the listings themselves for the rest.

Ranking factors and their weight
FactorWeightWhat it means
Phone number on file25 %Whether we hold a phone number for this company in a checked international format. It means you can call without hunting for the number. It says nothing about who picks up or how they work.
Website on file25 %Whether the entry has a company website you can open and read for yourself. A site to check makes the entry easier to verify against something we did not write. It is not a mark of quality.
Street address on file20 %Whether we hold a street address and not only a point on the map. An address can be checked on the ground, which is why it counts for more than the smaller fields below.
Email address on file10 %Whether we hold an email address, so you have a written route to the company as well as a phone. One more way to make contact, and no kind of rating.
Placed in a named town10 %Whether we could tie the company to a specific town rather than only to the wider district. It makes the entry easier to find on a local page, and carries no view on the company itself.
Named services10 %Whether the entry names specific services instead of sitting under a broad category. That gives you more to read before you make contact. It does not mean the work behind it is better.

The listing we highlight

On pages that cover one service in one area, the listing with the highest score on the factors above is repeated in a highlighted card above the list, marked with what put it there. It is the same company that sits first in the list below it, and the card says what that means: it is the entry we hold the most detail on, not the company we think is best. The highlight changes nothing — not the order, not the score, not who is included. It is calculated, and it is not sold or chosen by hand.

Often there is no such listing. Where two or more companies hold exactly the same score — which is common, because the score is built from six fields and lands on a short list of values — none of them holds more than the others, so we highlight nothing and the list starts at the top. A page without a highlighted card is not a page without a leader; it is a page where the leader would have been picked by a coin toss, and we would rather show you the list than toss it.

Paid placement

No company can pay to appear higher. We do not sell position, and we do not accept payment to include, exclude or reorder a listing.

Reviews and ratings

No review moves a company up or down this site. The six factors in the table above are the whole of the ordering, and every one of them is something we can check ourselves. A rating cannot be added to a score that counts only what we hold in the listing, so a company with glowing reviews sits exactly where its entry puts it.

We publish no rating of our own. Where a company has a rating on Google, the listing shows it, marked as Google’s: the average, how many people left it, and a link to the source. It is fetched from Google while you are looking at the page and stored nowhere — we do not collect those reviews, we cannot verify them, and we cannot edit or remove them. EU 2019/2161 requires that we say who stands behind a review shown here. On this site the answer is Google, and not us.

Sites we own

We own and operate the following sites. When they appear on this site, they are shown in a separate section labelled “From our own network” and are not part of the ranked list.

Where the data comes from

Listings are built from public registers (the Department of Registrar of Companies), professional bodies where membership can be checked, OpenStreetMap, and the companies’ own websites. Every field we hold records which source it came from and when.

Where a company appears in a professional or licensing register, the listing shows that registration with a link to the register it came from. It does not move the company up or down. It is not one of the six factors above, and we would rather show you the registration and say plainly that it carries no weight in the order than count something we have only checked for part of the register.

If a listing is wrong, or you want it removed, use the removal form. We respond within 30 days.
