Buy curtains that work when they are open

When ordering curtains for a Cyprus room, discuss the open position as carefully as the closed appearance. Ask the supplier to show where the fabric will sit when drawn back and how that relates to the window, door, furniture and surrounding finishes. A curtain order should describe how the room will be used, not just the fabric covering the glass.

This matters when a balcony door is used frequently, furniture sits close to a window or two openings share a short wall. The supplier needs to understand the desired movement and the actual constraints. Do not calculate a final track or curtain order from this article. Ask the responsible provider to establish measurements, suitable supports and the complete specification for your room.

Give each opening a separate reference

Label the openings on a simple room plan or a set of photographs. State which window or door opens, which side it opens towards and what furniture is intended nearby. Include planned changes so the supplier does not measure only the current arrangement. A sofa that will move after installation can change the practical question the curtain order needs to address.

Ask the supplier to distinguish preliminary enquiry dimensions from the measurements it will accept for manufacture. Identify who performs the final check and when. If you are supplying measurements yourself, obtain the supplier's actual instructions and acceptance conditions. Do not assume a room photograph provides enough information to release a made-to-measure order.

Ask for a drawing of the open arrangement

Request a simple illustration showing the track or pole extent, opening direction and proposed position of the open curtains. Ask the maker to explain its assumptions about the selected fabric and heading. Different constructions can produce a different appearance when gathered. The provider should establish the arrangement for the product being ordered rather than borrowing a rule from another installation.

IKEA's VIDGA buying guide is a useful example of a manufacturer distinguishing window width from the wider curtain-track decision. It also asks buyers to consider surrounding objects and the choice between wall and ceiling mounting. Those are product-system examples, not universal dimensions or fitting instructions for an unrelated track in a Cyprus property.

Consider a living room where a curtain panel would gather beside the balcony door. Ask whether the proposed open position interferes with the intended use of that opening. If the answer requires moving furniture or changing the opening arrangement, decide that before approving manufacture. A later change may involve more than shortening a track or moving a hook.

Review the neighbouring furniture

Show the maker the intended position of sideboards, shelving, bedside tables and tall furniture near the openings. Identify anything that has not yet been ordered. Ask whether the curtain arrangement assumes a clear space that the furnishing plan does not provide. Keep that question visible until the room plan and curtain order agree.

For a coordinated furnishing discussion, Interiordesigner.cy is a useful starting point. Share the supplier's proposed open and closed arrangement alongside the furniture layout. A common reference can make the design conversation more precise. It does not transfer the track supplier's responsibility for confirming the final product and installation requirements.

Separate the mounting decision from the visual preference

An owner may prefer the appearance of a ceiling-mounted track. The provider must still assess the actual location and establish an appropriate installation. Ask what information it needs about the surface, concealed work and surrounding finishes. Do not select fixings, drill a ceiling or open a surface to answer an online quote request.

If a curtain recess or pelmet is part of a refurbishment, identify who sets out the accepted detail and who checks it before completion. Renovate.cy gives the owner a route for organising that broader work enquiry. Keep the curtain-maker's accepted requirements with the project records so the contractor does not finish a recess using an unconfirmed preliminary sketch.

Decide how the two layers relate

If the order contains a sheer and a heavier curtain, ask the supplier to demonstrate or explain the intended use of each layer. Discuss whether they open independently, where each gathers and how the finished arrangement looks in the positions you expect to use. A sample board of two fabrics will not answer those operational questions on its own.

Keep control decisions equally clear. A manual arrangement and a motorised arrangement can have different quotation boundaries. Ask who supplies and demonstrates the accepted controls, and how the chosen system relates to the actual curtain specification. Do not assume a connected-home function is included because a supplier's general catalogue mentions it.

Compare complete installed offers

Ask each offer to identify the accepted opening references, fabric, heading, lining, track or pole, mounting position and installation service. Note whether measurement, delivery, fitting, dressing and any agreed adjustment are included. Ask what happens if a finish or building detail is not ready on the arranged fitting date.

Keep revisions together. If a maker changes the opening arrangement to accommodate furniture, request a revised drawing and an explanation of any price effect. Avoid accepting a new total while retaining an old drawing that no longer describes the order. A clear revision record is useful for both purchaser and supplier when several similar openings are involved.

Test the agreed use at handover

Ask the installer to demonstrate the accepted open and closed positions and to provide the instructions relevant to the supplied system. Check the result against the agreed opening references and final drawing. Record unresolved items through the provider's actual handover process rather than assuming every difference can be addressed by a later informal visit.

The VIDGA guide illustrates the value of considering the window, surrounding objects and mounting choice together. Your supplier must confirm the complete arrangement for your selected products. The order is ready when the room plan and the open-curtain position tell the same story, with no essential space left to assumption.
