The lighting problem in a Cypriot house is rarely a shortage of light. For most of the year the daytime task is subtraction — shutters down, blinds across, rooms deliberately dimmed against a high, hard sun — and the artificial scheme then has to work in rooms whose surfaces were chosen to bounce whatever light reaches them. Pale terrazzo, honed marble, white render and limewash are all reflectors. Put an unshielded source in a room finished that way and the glare arrives twice, once directly and once off the floor.

Two decisions carry a scheme here: the quality of the light — its colour temperature and how faithfully it renders the materials — and whether the source is visible. Fitting shape and shade material are refinements of those.

The Mediterranean constraint

Rooms are shaded by day, so daylight hours need artificial light too. A house detailed properly for this climate closes down through the middle of the day, and north-facing rooms, internal corridors, stairwells and kitchens set behind a deep veranda then run on artificial light through a July afternoon — the reverse of the northern assumption that a scheme only matters after dark.

Reflective floors amplify everything. Terrazzo, microcement, polished marble and large-format porcelain behave like a second ceiling — a bare lamp appears again underfoot at what reads as full strength. Deep-baffled fittings, honeycomb louvres and opal diffusers exist to solve exactly this.

Heat shortens driver life. LED drivers fail long before the chips do, and they fail faster in still, hot air. In the Nicosia suburbs, where the island's widest temperature range already drives insulation and shading specifications, a driver buried in an insulated ceiling under a flat roof sits in the worst thermal position in the building. Fittings rated for enclosed insulated ceilings, and drivers mounted where a hand can reach them, are the answers.

Salt reaches the parts of a fitting nobody sees. In Kato Paphos and along the directly exposed coast, salt-laden air gets into terminal blocks, spring clips, lamp holders and the screws holding a track to a ceiling. Galvanised and marine-grade fixings are standard specification there rather than an upgrade, and anodised or fully powder-coated aluminium outlives plated finishes.

The building stock decides what is possible. Much of the stock in Strovolos and the surrounding Nicosia suburbs dates from the 1970s to the 1990s, where rewiring dominates renovation work and the original provision is one ceiling point per room on one switch — so any real scheme there is a rewiring decision made while the walls are open. In the newer Limassol towers it inverts: concrete slabs cannot be chased or cored at will, so light arrives via a dropped plasterboard ceiling, a perimeter bulkhead or surface track. In the holiday-let districts around Ayia Napa, refurbishment concentrates into November to March, which is when electricians are booked hardest.

What works here

Warm white, held at one colour temperature. Living areas sit at 2,700 to 3,000 K, and consistency matters more than the exact value: a room lit at two colour temperatures reads as a fault even to someone who cannot name what is wrong. Fittings from different production batches also vary in tint, so a scheme is ordered in one batch rather than topped up months later.

High colour rendering, specified rather than assumed. CRI 90 or above is the threshold where stone, timber, plaster and textiles keep their colour after dark. Below it, travertine goes grey and olive-toned paint goes muddy.

Indirect light off a white ceiling. A plaster-in aluminium profile in a cove, a perimeter bulkhead, or an uplight above tall joinery turns the ceiling into the source — the most forgiving technique available in a room with a reflective floor, because there is no bright point left to reflect.

Grazing light on textured walls. Limewash, exposed limestone and rustic village stone come alive when light runs close down the face rather than striking it flat. Set the fitting near the wall plane; further out, the texture flattens.

Track and surface fittings, treated as a legitimate choice. Where a slab cannot be chased, matt black or bone powder-coated track with adjustable spots beats a dropped ceiling built purely to hide cable, and it re-aims when the furniture moves. Shades matter as much as fittings: opal glass, alabaster, unglazed ceramic, parchment and linen soften the source, while woven rattan throws pattern that suits a dining table and rarely suits a room's only source.

Vertical light at mirrors. A face lit from overhead gets the shadows anyone who has used a hotel bathroom will recognise; fittings either side at eye level, or a backlit mirror, solve it. Wet areas carry an IP rating — IP44 as the minimum in splash zones, IP65 in shower zones and on covered external areas. Warm colour temperature outdoors earns its place twice over: on a veranda in use every evening from May, it draws noticeably fewer insects than a blue-rich cool white.

What does not travel

Cool white as a default. Lamps at 4,000 K and above are widely stocked here and read clinical against limestone, limewash and ochre finishes. They belong in a garage.

The ceiling grid. Downlights at fixed centres light the floor evenly and the room badly. The furniture, joinery and artwork are what the light is for.

Non-dimmable drivers bought to save on the fitting. Dimming is designed in at the driver, and a scheme half-built from dimmable and half from fixed-output fittings cannot be reconciled afterwards.

Coring a structural slab. Recessing a downlight into a post-tensioned slab is not a finishes decision; work that touches structure needs a registered engineer.

Plated hardware near the sea. Plated brass and plain steel brackets, lamp holders and pendant suspensions pit and stain within a season or two of direct coastal exposure.

Choosing fittings after plastering. Cable routes, driver positions, switch drops and recessed profiles are first-fix work. A cove that is trivial to form while the ceiling is being built becomes demolition afterwards.

Materials and where to get them

Aluminium extrusion is fabricated on the island, which makes plaster-in and surface profiles for linear LED one of the few genuinely local elements of a scheme — cut, mitred and finished to the run rather than assembled from stock lengths. Local stone yards supply alabaster and marble for shades and bases, and working potters and rattan makers produce pieces that sit against Cypriot plaster better than an imported equivalent does.

Everything else is imported, which means lead time and batch. Architectural fittings run to several weeks, longer through the November to March peak. Batch is the point that catches people out: tint variation between production runs passes unnoticed in a showroom and is obvious across one ceiling.

Electrical wholesalers in every district stock the drivers, dimmer modules and cable, and hold warm white as readily as cool once asked. Fixed wiring and anything touching the incoming supply belong to a registered electrician; the Electricity Authority of Cyprus handles supply and metering, and ETEK holds the register of engineers entitled to sign off work affecting structure or the building envelope.

Two questions decide most of the cost before a fitting is chosen:

  1. What the ceiling actually is

    Slab, void or dropped plasterboard, and how deep. This governs whether recessed fittings are possible, where drivers can live and whether a cove can be formed — a short check that removes most of the catalogue.

  2. What is being lit, room by room

    A worktop, a stair nosing, a stone wall, a dining table, a reading chair. A list of surfaces produces a lighting plan; a list of fittings produces a ceiling grid.

Common questions

What colour temperature suits a Cypriot interior?

2,700 to 3,000 K through living areas, bedrooms and circulation. It flatters the warm end of the local palette — limestone, travertine, terracotta, limewash, olive timber. Cooler light at 4,000 K and above has a place over a worktop or in a utility room, but run through a living space it fights every finish in it.

How many downlights does a room need?

Fewer than a grid layout assumes. Mark the worktop, the stair, the artwork and the joinery on a plan, light those, then add an indirect layer for general brightness.

Do lighting decisions have to be made before plastering?

The provision does — cable routes, driver positions, switch drops, recessed profiles and any cove. The fittings themselves can be chosen later, as long as the type is fixed at first fix.

Does a lighting change need permission?

Replacing fittings and altering internal wiring is finishes-level work and sits outside the permit regime. What does not is anything structural, anything altering the external appearance of the building, or in an apartment block anything the management regulations cover. Fixed wiring is certified work in any case, and belongs to a registered electrician.
