Shutters and window treatments that work in Cypriot light
Which shutters, blinds and curtains hold up to Cypriot sun, salt and thermal movement — and which ones fade, warp or seize within a single summer.

Elena covers interior design, furniture and lighting for Cypriot homes. Her focus is the gap between a scheme drawn for a northern European climate and one that survives this light, this heat and, near the coast, this salt.

The decision that matters at a Cypriot window is made outside the glass, not inside it. External shading intercepts solar gain before it passes through the pane; an internal blind or curtain can only manage heat that has already entered the room and is radiating off the fabric. Everything else — colour, weave, stack-back, whether the shutter is louvred or solid — is a refinement of that one choice.
The working combination in a Cypriot house is an external layer that takes the sun and the weather, an insect screen that stays in place all summer, and an internal layer chosen for light quality and privacy rather than for heat.
The Mediterranean constraint
Hard light at a high angle. July sun arriving nearly overhead is intercepted by anything horizontal — an overhang, a projecting shutter box, a louvre at the right pitch — while low winter sun passes under it. So fixed horizontal shading works on south elevations and fails on west ones, where late sun arrives almost level with the glass. West-facing rooms need something adjustable.
Temperature swing, which is an inland problem. Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and that range is what moves materials. A dark PVC roller slat on a west-facing Nicosia window bows, and once bowed it catches in the guides. The same slat on a shaded north elevation lasts indefinitely.
Salt, which is a coastal one. Within a few hundred metres of the sea, and directly in Kato Paphos, salt-laden air reaches every concealed component: shutter springs, roller axles, end caps, the screws holding a track to a lintel. Marine-grade stainless and galvanised fixings are the standard specification there rather than an upgrade, and anodised or architecturally powder-coated aluminium outperforms plated finishes by a wide margin.
The building stock decides the geometry. Much of the stock in the Nicosia suburbs dates from the 1970s to the 1990s, and in that construction an external roller shutter recessed into a box above the opening is already there, cast into the lintel — so the work is usually replacing slats, guides and mechanism rather than choosing a treatment from scratch. In the newer Limassol towers the problem inverts: floor-to-ceiling glazing and wind loading that rules out anything external that flaps.
Access and season. Steep approach roads around Peyia cap the size of a one-piece shutter or full-height screen that can reach a hillside plot. And because accommodation in Ayia Napa and along that coast is largely seasonal, refurbishment concentrates into November to March — fabricators are booked hardest through exactly that window.
What works here
External louvred shutters in anodised or powder-coated aluminium. Adjustable blades give control over a west elevation that a fixed overhang cannot, they vent the heat trapped between shutter and glass, and aluminium neither swells nor needs repainting. The finish matters more than the profile: anodising and a full architectural powder-coat survive coastal exposure; a thin decorative coat does not.
External roller shutters with foam-filled aluminium slats. Heavier and quieter than hollow PVC, far more stable in heat, and they black out properly — the reason they are near-universal in Cypriot bedrooms. In an existing box the upgrade from tired PVC to aluminium slats usually keeps the guides.
Solid timber shutters on village houses, in a species that tolerates movement. Painted or oiled iroko, cedar and accoya hold their line where pine does not, and a plain board-and-batten leaf in olive, ochre or off-white sits better against limestone than a factory-white plastic profile.
Insect screens designed in rather than added on. A retractable pleated or roller screen in the same frame system as the shutter disappears when it is not needed. Screens bolted on afterwards are the most common visual compromise in an otherwise resolved elevation.
Internal linen, cotton canvas and solution-dyed acrylic, hung generously. With the heat handled outside, the internal layer can be chosen for how it diffuses light. Loose-woven linen in bone, oatmeal or unbleached white reads correctly under Mediterranean light and hides creasing; solution-dyed acrylic holds colour where a surface-dyed cloth will not.
A ceiling recess or deep pelmet for the track. It removes the hardware from view, closes the light gap at the top of a blackout blind, and costs almost nothing if it is decided before the ceiling is skimmed.
What does not travel
Internal blinds treated as the whole solar strategy. A dark internal roller on a sunlit window becomes a radiant panel: it cuts glare and it does not cut heat. Specifying it in place of external shading is the most expensive mistake here, because it shows up as a cooling bill rather than as a fault.
Heavy interlined drapery. Three-layer curtains with bump interlining are a cold-climate device. Here they hold dust and read as visual weight in rooms that want the opposite.
Hollow PVC roller slats on west and south elevations. Cheap, common, and the first thing to bow in an inland summer. Once one slat deforms the whole curtain jams in the guides, and the slat run is replaced rather than the component.
Surface-dyed and printed fabrics at a sunny window. Fading appears as a hard line at the edge of the shadow cast by the reveal.
Plated brass and plain steel hardware near the coast. Track brackets, tie-back hooks, hinges and pins all pit, and the fixings behind the plaster corrode first and stain through it later.
Motorisation decided after first fix. Retro-fitting a motor means a surface cable run or a chase cut into a finished wall. The decision belongs with the electrical layout, not with the soft furnishings.
Changing the external appearance without checking. Replacing internal finishes sits outside the permit regime; altering the exterior of a building does not, and in an apartment block the management regulations usually fix the colour and profile of anything visible from outside. A shutter is an external element even when the reason for changing it is internal.
Materials and where to get them
Aluminium window and shutter systems are fabricated on the island, and the workshops that make the frames also make the boxes, guides and insect screens — the argument for ordering all of it from one supplier rather than sourcing a screen separately and finding it will not sit in the reveal. Timber shutters are made to order by local joiners, but the hardwood is imported, so lead time follows the timber rather than the workshop.
Fabric is the reverse case: makers work from imported cloth, and the constraint is batch rather than availability, since dye lots vary enough that a room finished later will not match. Ordering the whole scheme at once, with an allowance for a remake, avoids that.
Three questions are worth settling before anything is ordered, and none concern the fabric:
What already exists in the reveal
Whether there is a shutter box, its depth, the guide spacing, and whether the mechanism is corded, geared or wired. In post-1970s stock the existing box usually dictates the slat type, and measuring it first removes most of the catalogue.
Which elevation each window faces
South and west openings need the external layer specified properly; north and heavily shaded openings are a light and privacy question. One scheme applied uniformly to every window is either over-specified on one side or under-specified on the other.
What the concealed metal is
Springs, axles, hinges, brackets and screws. Within reach of salt air these are specified marine-grade stainless or galvanised — a modest premium at order stage, and the difference between servicing a mechanism and replacing it.
Where a scheme covers several rooms, the shading strategy, fabric schedule and hardware specification are normally produced together as one document that a fabricator prices against, and that work is charged by floor area.

Covers layout options, 3D visualisation, material and finish schedules, furniture and lighting specification and working drawings. Low end is a basic design-only package on a project of 50 m² or more; single rooms and small flats are charged nearer €100/m² because of the fixed base effort, and premium studios with full project supervision reach €100–200/m². One Cypriot studio adds 20% for projects under 100 m². | €30–€200per m² | €50 |

Where the work touches the building envelope — a new opening, a structural lintel, or altered external appearance — the professional who signs it off is a registered architect or civil engineer, and ETEK holds the register. Our material and colour references cover the finish-level detail, and the regional design pages set out how the answer changes between a Troodos stone house and a seafront apartment.
Common questions
Are external shutters worth it if the house already has good glazing?
Usually yes, because they solve a different problem. Solar-control glass reduces the gain that passes through the pane; external shading stops much of it reaching the pane at all. Glazing also cannot be adjusted through the day, and a west elevation in August needs adjustment.
What colour should external shutters be in Cyprus?
Pale colours run cooler and show salt deposit less, which matters within sight of the sea. Olive, sage, dove grey and off-white sit correctly against both limestone and rendered blockwork. Dark colours are viable on dimensionally stable aluminium; the same shade on PVC is the combination that bows.
Can roller shutters in an old apartment be upgraded without replacing the box?
Frequently. If the box depth and guide spacing suit, the slat curtain, the webbing or belt and the winding mechanism can be changed while the box and guides stay. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in the 1970s to 1990s apartment stock, and worth establishing before a full window replacement is quoted.
When in a project should window treatments be decided?
When the electrical layout is set. Motor cables, switch positions and any recessed track or pelmet have to be built in before plastering, and a ceiling recess that is trivial to form during construction becomes a rebuild afterwards. The fabric choice can wait; the provision for it cannot.
