Shading and sun control for Cypriot houses
Shade that sits outside the glass is worth more than any curtain inside it. How to shade a Cypriot house by elevation, and what the wrong answers cost.

Shade only counts if it sits outside the glass. Once sunlight has passed through a window it has become heat inside the room, and a blind, a curtain or a film can control the glare but not the temperature. Every effective shading decision in a Cypriot house is therefore made on the outside of the building; internal treatments are comfort and light decisions layered on top.
That distinction — external interception versus internal control — explains why two houses with identical glazing and identical air conditioning behave completely differently in August.
The Mediterranean constraint
The sun here is high in summer and low in winter, which sounds straightforward until the elevations are taken separately.
South is the easy one. Against a high summer sun, a horizontal projection — a deep eave, a balcony above, a solid pergola roof — shades the glass for most of the day while letting the lower winter sun under it. Traditional Cypriot houses solved this by putting the upper floor's balcony over the ground floor's openings.
West is the difficult one, and the one that matters. Late afternoon sun arrives low and almost horizontally, at the hottest point of the day, when the fabric has already absorbed a full day of heat. Overhangs do almost nothing against it. West-facing glass needs something vertical and adjustable — external shutters, sliding louvred screens, fins — or it needs to be smaller. A west-facing living room with full-height glazing and an internal blind is the most common comfort failure in modern Cypriot housing.
East is the same geometry at a friendlier hour, so the same vertical devices work with less urgency.
Roofs take the most of all. Horizontal surfaces receive the highest summer irradiance, which is why an uninsulated flat roof drives the first-floor cooling load and an unshaded rooflight is a heat source rather than a light source.
Two local factors sit over the geometry. Inland, where Nicosia records the widest temperature range on the island and insulation and shading specifications are driven by it, a house wants shade in August and gain in January, so fixed devices are a compromise and adjustable ones are not. On the coast, at places like Kato Paphos where salt-laden air makes galvanised and marine-grade fixings standard, the constraint moves to the hardware: external shading sits in the harshest position on the building, and its brackets, tracks and fasteners fail long before its panels do.
What works here
Works well when
External aluminium roller shutters. Fixed and adjustable louvred shutters. Sliding and folding louvred screens. Vertical fins on west and east elevations. Deep reveals and eaves on south elevations. Bioclimatic pergolas with rotating blades. Timber pergolas with a deciduous vine. Reed and cane matting over a frame. Solar-control and low-e glazing units. Pale, high-reflectance external finishes. Shaded courtyards and light wells. Internal timber shutters and heavy woven linen as a second layer.
Three of these do most of the work.
External shutters, treated as standard rather than as an extra. Aluminium roller shutters and louvred panels reject the gain at the face of the building, give complete blackout and add night security. On west elevations the louvred version is preferable because it closes against the sun while still admitting air — which matters in the evening, when night ventilation is doing the cooling.
The pergola, sized for shade rather than for a photograph. A pergola earns its cost when it shades the glass behind it, not only the table under it: depth in front of the opening, and blades or planting dense enough to block a low sun. Bioclimatic aluminium versions rotate their blades and close against rain; timber versions carrying a vine shade heavily in summer and let light through once the leaves drop. Both are priced by covered area, so the budget question is how much of the elevation is protected.

Glazing specified for solar gain, not only for heat loss. A north-European specification optimises U-value; here the g-value — how much solar energy the unit lets through — decides summer comfort. Solar-control coatings on the correct pane cut transmitted heat while keeping the glass visually clear. Raise it before the units are ordered: it costs little then and cannot be added afterwards.

Colour belongs in the same argument. Pale walls, paving and pergola soffits cut the radiant load reaching the openings, while a dark terrace outside a window re-radiates heat into the room all evening. Inside, matte pale finishes spread what daylight does enter, so smaller and better-shaded openings still feel bright.
What does not travel

Internal venetian blinds as the primary sun control. Blackout curtains on an unshaded west window. Solar film retrofitted to single glazing. Unshaded rooflights and glass roofs. Retractable fabric awnings on exposed coastal elevations. Dark anodised or dark powder-coated frames on a west elevation. Untreated softwood pergolas. Standard-grade fixings on seafront hardware. Full-height glazing specified for the view with shading left to a later phase.
The common error is sequencing rather than product choice. Glazing is ordered early, shading is treated as a finishing item, and by the time the shading budget is reached it has been spent. Retrofitting shutters to a completed aluminium system costs more and is rarely as neat as a box designed into the opening.
Two imported habits also fail. Maximising glazing to capture winter solar gain is a sound instinct in northern Europe and a costly one here, where the cooling season is far longer than the heating one. And using mechanical cooling to correct a shading problem leaves capacity sized for unshaded west glass — larger to buy and permanently more expensive to run.

Materials and where to get them
External shading in Cyprus is overwhelmingly aluminium, fabricated locally from imported profile. The fabricator, not a catalogue, is where the specification is settled — and the questions are what pretreatment the metal received, whether the powder coat is specified for a coastal environment, and what grade the fixings and track hardware are. Anodising outlasts powder coat where the colour range allows, and on a seafront property marine-grade fasteners are the difference between hardware that lasts and hardware that seizes.
Shutter boxes, guides and motors come through the same window fabricators, which is the argument for settling shading and glazing in one conversation rather than two. Motorised units need a supply at the head of the opening, so the decision precedes first-fix electrics.
Timber pergolas are built by local joiners from imported section, oiled rather than film-varnished so maintenance is a recoat rather than a strip. Reed and cane matting over a frame remains the cheapest dense shade on the island, though it is replaced rather than maintained.

Common questions
Which elevation should be shaded first?
West, in almost every Cypriot house. It takes low sun at the hottest hour, when the fabric is already saturated with heat, and overhangs cannot protect it. South is next and the easiest to solve. North rarely needs shading at all, which is why a north-facing room is an asset here rather than the compromise it is further north.
Do internal blinds and curtains do anything useful?
They control glare, privacy and light quality, and are worth having. What they do not do is keep heat out: the energy has already crossed the glass by the time they intercept it, and a closed blind on a sunlit window warms up and re-radiates into the room. Behind external shutters they work well; alone on a west window they disappoint.
Is solar-control glass enough on its own?
It helps considerably and is the right specification when glazing is being replaced anyway, but it is a fixed reduction that applies in January as well as in July. Adjustable external shading gives summer rejection and winter gain from the same opening. The strongest combination is both.
Does good shading remove the need for air conditioning?
It reduces the load and the running hours rather than removing the equipment. A shaded, insulated house with night ventilation holds up through much of the summer and still needs cooling in a heatwave, particularly in bedrooms under a flat roof. Shade first, roof insulation second, cooling sized for what is left.
Do external shutters need permission?
For a single dwelling, replacing or adding shutters within existing openings is normally treated as maintenance rather than development, while new fixed structures, enclosures and anything altering the external form of the building may not be. Settling the category with the planning authority before ordering is quicker than settling it afterwards.
