Elena covers interior design, furniture and lighting for Cypriot homes. Her focus is the gap between a scheme drawn for a northern European climate and one that survives this light, this heat and, near the coast, this salt.

A bedroom in Cyprus is judged at three in the morning in August and again on a damp January night, and almost nothing in a styling photograph affects either. What does is the order of the shading layers, where the wardrobe sits in relation to the external wall, and whether the room can be dark and ventilated at the same time. Settle those and the rest is genuinely a matter of taste.

The Mediterranean constraint

Cypriot masonry stores heat. A concrete slab and blockwork walls absorb solar gain through the day and release it back into the room after sunset, which is why a bedroom can feel hotter at midnight than at six in the evening. Inland, the problem is sharper still: Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and that swing is what drives both the insulation and the shading specification in any honest brief.

The winter half of the year sets a different trap. Bedrooms are the least heated rooms in most Cypriot homes, and external walls in older stock are single-skin block with concrete columns and beams running through them. Those columns are colder than the wall around them, warm moist air condenses on the cold line, and by February there is a dark bloom in the corner behind the wardrobe. That is a surface temperature problem with a decorating symptom, not a cleaning failure.

Humidity varies more across the island than people expect. Around Oroklini, the salt lake raises ambient humidity enough to change damp-proofing specifications, and the same air reaches wardrobes, mattresses and anything upholstered. On the direct coast at Kato Paphos the air also carries salt, which attacks window hardware, shutter mechanisms and exposed fixings continuously and quietly.

Access is the last constraint, and the one that ambushes projects. In the Limassol high-rise stock the lift car and the stairwell turn decide whether a wardrobe arrives assembled or is built in the room.

What works here

Shading outside the glass, in that order. Solar gain stopped before it reaches the window never enters the room; absorbed by an internal blind, it does. The Cypriot rolling shutter is unglamorous and highly effective, and louvred external shutters do the same while still admitting air. Internal curtains are the third layer, for light control, not for heat.

Blackout and ventilation as one problem. A shutter that blocks light also blocks the night breeze unless it is louvred or slatted. The workable answer is an external shutter for daytime heat, an insect screen on the openable sash, and a lined curtain for the last of the light.

The wardrobe used as a thermal buffer. A full-height run of built-in storage on the wall that takes the afternoon sun puts board and still air between the hot masonry and the bed — the cheapest improvement available in a west-facing bedroom, and free if the storage was being built anyway.

A ventilation gap behind that storage on external walls. Never scribe a carcass tight to a cold external wall with no air movement behind it. A batten gap and vented plinth ends stop the trapped-air condensation that produces mould on the back panel.

Ceiling fan plus split unit, not split unit alone. A fan lets the air conditioning run at a higher set point, and keeps air moving on shoulder-season nights when cooling is not wanted. Position the indoor unit so the airflow crosses the room rather than the pillow, and confirm where the condensate drains — into a proper run, not onto the facade, which in the Limassol towers is exactly the detail that returns later as staining and waterproofing work.

Hard floors with rugs. Tile, stone or microcement over a stable screed reads cooler underfoot, survives dust and can be washed. A wool or cotton rug beside the bed puts the warmth where it is wanted and can be lifted.

Mineral, breathable wall finishes on external walls. Lime plaster and mineral paints let a wall dry outwards. They do not replace insulation, but on a wall with a known cold line they buy back a margin that plastic-bound emulsion does not.

Natural fibres in everything that touches skin. Linen and cotton bedding, cotton or wool rugs, timber or rattan rather than moulded synthetic — a comfort decision in a climate where synthetic bedding is unusable for months at a time.

Warm, low, layered light. Wall lights or pendants beside the bed rather than one central fitting, switched at the bed, with a warm colour temperature.

What does not travel

Wall-to-wall fitted carpet. It holds dust and humidity, and in a house where windows stay open it is a cleaning liability rather than a comfort.

Internal blinds as the only shading. The commonest imported mistake. The glass still heats, the blind absorbs and re-radiates, and the room runs warmer than one with an external shutter on the same elevation.

A radiator wall in the plan. Northern layouts reserve the space under the window for a radiator and arrange the furniture around it. Cypriot bedrooms are heated and cooled by a wall-mounted split unit near the ceiling, which frees that wall and moves the constraint upwards, to the pipe run and the drain.

Heavy upholstered headboards in coastal rooms. Salt air and humidity are hard on padding and on anything that cannot be washed. Timber, rattan, cane and slipcovered fabric survive; deep buttoned velvet against an external wall does not.

Mirrored wardrobe doors opposite the window. They bounce the afternoon sun back into the room, and they show the dust film that open windows guarantee.

Solid timber flooring in an unshaded room. The swing between an air-conditioned August and an unheated January moves timber more than the fitting tolerance assumes, and the boards telegraph it at the joints.

Paper-backed wallpaper on external walls near the coast. It lifts first where a wall is condensing, and hides the problem while it worsens.

Those figures are read from our own price index when the page loads, so they stay current. Within the range, a bedroom moves on three things: whether the storage is built in or freestanding, whether the room needs shading and glazing work rather than decoration, and whether an external wall has a condensation problem to resolve before anything is fixed to it.

Built-in wardrobes are best made locally. Workshops in the Nicosia industrial zones and around Limassol and Paphos template the actual opening, which matters because walls in older flats are rarely square and a proprietary module leaves fillers everywhere. Ask for moisture-resistant board, edged on all four sides, and vented ends where a carcass meets an external wall. In a high-rise flat, ask early whether the doors and the tallest carcass fit the lift — that answer decides whether the unit is assembled in the workshop or in the room.

External shutters and screens come from the aluminium fabricators found in every district. Near the coast, specify anodised or properly powder-coated aluminium and stainless fixings rather than plated steel. Shutter mechanisms seize first, so choose a fabricator who services what they sell.

Timing matters. Holiday-let stock in Protaras turns over in short windows between bookings, and resort refurbishment concentrates in the cooler months, which is when fitters and fabricators are busiest.

Our interior design section covers materials and room types in more depth, the services pages set out what each trade delivers, and the area pages describe how building stock differs between the coastal strip, the Nicosia suburbs and the mountain villages. Where work touches the structure, an opening or the facade, an ETEK-registered engineer or architect should be involved, and the Department of Town Planning and Housing is the authority on what needs consent. For insulation and glazing upgrades, the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry is where to check what support is currently available.

Common questions

How do I stop a bedroom overheating without running air conditioning all night?

In order of effect: shade the glass externally, close the shutters during the day rather than after sunset, ventilate across the room once the outside air is cooler than the inside, and use a ceiling fan to raise the temperature at which the room feels comfortable. Air conditioning then handles what is left rather than doing all the work.

Why does mould appear in the same corner every winter?

Almost always because a concrete column or beam runs through the external wall there and its surface sits colder than the plaster around it, so moist air condenses on the cold line. Wiping and repainting treats the symptom; the durable answers are insulation on that element, air movement in the corner, and a breathable finish.

Built-in wardrobes or freestanding?

Built-in wins on fit and on the thermal benefit against a hot wall, and is the better answer in older flats where nothing is square. Freestanding wins where the room may be reconfigured, or where lift and stair access make delivering a large carcass impractical. In a holiday let it also means a damaged unit is replaced between bookings rather than rebuilt.

Redecorating, new storage and new floor finishes normally do not. It changes if an opening is enlarged, a wall removed, or the facade altered — a new window, a shutter box, or a penetration for a split unit on a shared elevation. In an apartment block, anything on the facade or in the shared parts involves the management committee as well as the planning authority.
